Chasing MS March 21, 2006 Back in January 05, Wertz and i played a show at Passion where we did the whole set swapping songs. I kept having to play my mid tempos after all his up fun songs and immediately realized i needed more fun âfastâ songs on the next record. So i went to work writing songs that would help my life show have a bit more âenergyâ and âfunâ. This album is still one of my proudest moments. So bizarre. So fun. Complete and utter abandon with no thought as to what people would think of it or how/if it fit in the 2006 musical spectrum. I wanted a fun, uptempo, heartfelt, musical, funky record that showcased the players and i feel like i got that. A album that not only friends would like, but my musical friends and players would dig also. â¨We recorded this album in about 5 days. I hold a record with @edcashstudios that iâm insanely proud of still that happened making this record. I recorded 8 lead vocals and 5 songs acoustic parts in one day. No clue how i did. Iâve only been in the zone twice in my life. Once, in bowling, where i bowled a 220, and that afternoon. I used the same band for all the songs - Dan Needham (drums), Calvin Turner (bass), Justin Rosolino (electric) and Ben Shive (keys). EXCEPT on Someday, Sarah which was @scott_williamson_music (Drums), Jackie Street (bass), Ed (electrics/acoustic) and Shive (keys). We actually recorded Someday, Sarah during the Brother, Bring the Sun sessions and i was too chicken to put it on the album, but Ed convinced me to for Chasing, so we did. And man, am i glad we did. Still in my top 5 favorite songs of mine. This was the album all my Stevie Wonder influences came out in droves. I was learning new chords and progressions and was insanely inspired by all of it. Most importantly, this was the album i was falling in love with Annie. I LOVE this record - itâs a musical journal of all that was happening in my life - so many of these songs are about falling in love and are true stories. If you didnât get a chance to see the packaging for this album, itâs still my favorite - done by the superhuman @matt_lehman - i added all these sort of âfun factsâ in the artwork Continued in the comments
Brother, Bring the Sun September 21, 2004 It was FINALLY time to record a full length album. I knew I wanted to do it with @edcashstudio , so we met, talked songs, and realized I only had about 8 or so we both loved, but decided to go ahead and start recording, trusting the other couple of songs would come. We had a couple of bands that we used - Dan Needham (drums), Calvin Turner (bass) were one rhythm section, and @scott_williamson_music (drums) and Jackie Street (bass) were the other. Chris Kent played bass on Prayers and What Am I Gonna Do? Ben Shive played all the keys and Ed mostly played all the electrics, some acoustics and all the other sprinkle dust magic sauce you hear. I canât really explain enough how much of a dream come true this was - i consumed music at a alarming rate, and was completely obsessed with reading the liner notes to see who played on what songs, and these guys were and are my heroes. I was a kid in a candy store. I really wanted my first album (and all the rest, honestly!) to be diverse like my musical idols records were - Billy Joel, Bonnie Raitt, Stevie Wonder, Paul Simon, James Taylor - these artists have always been eclectic, making music that ranged from rock to funk to acoustic sometimes even on the same album. I wanted to give myself a wide berth as i started my career so that i always had a lot of room to move around in, hopefully not getting pegged as one certain sound. Songs - Crazyboutya was me trying to be Ed Cash. Its also when my love for Stevie Wonder really peeked its head out in my songwriting and production. Until You is a feel and vibe that is one of my favorite types of songs - that âMissing Youâ by John Waite feel that i always love to hear artists do. it is still one of my favorite lyrics iâve written. Canât Grow Tired of Your Love was a song Ed and i made kind of as a track for fun and then we wrote the song to it. LA Song was a song i wrote in about the time it takes to listen to and was about a dear friend of mine living in LA. I changed the verse melody when we recorded it because it sounded better in the track, but I still sing the original live because thatâs how I know it. Continued in comments!
Over the next few weeks, iâm going to post about one of my albums once a week - all THIRTEEN of them. Good gracious. Is that too many? Maybe. Stop judging me. So, buckle up and enjoy the ride! Three, Then Four Released 1/15/02 I worked for @edcashstudio most of 2001 (my first year out of MTSU) as kind of whatever-he-needed-errand-help-around-the-studio boy. Toward the end of the year, I knew i wanted to move on to playing music full time and Ed kindly offered to record 5 of my songs acoustically. I vividly remember sitting in his studio playing him about 12 or 13 songs, and him saying âI think you have 5 really good songs in there,â and being SO frustrated because i was sure i had at LEAST 10 bangers, as the kids would say. Looking back, he basically saved my career. If i had released all of those songs, iâm honestly not sure it would have ever worked. He knew there were only 5 real songs in there, and thankfully helped me understand what we has hearing and why. We recorded the album over 2 days, with me playing the acoustic parts mostly one day and singing the next. It was done really quickly. I remember later being so proud of myself not knowing that Ed was preparing himself to replay the acoustic parts in the event i couldnât pull it off. Thankfully, i did. I wrote Close Your Eyes and Graceâs Amazing Hands my senior year of college and Love in the Remains, Sticks and Stones and Nothing Fancy in the first year living in Nashville. They represent a season where i was listening to TONS of folk music - lots of acoustic stuff that i really wanted to do myself. It wasnât until later in my career i really started to try to write more âpopâ leaning songs. At the time i wanted to write substantial, weighted, heartfelt songs - lots of @bebonorman , @mrdavidwilcox , John Gorka, @jonathabrooke , and @indigogirlsmusic influence in there. Graceâs Amazing Hands is a direct result of @tommylsims . I toured off of this one 5 song album for almost TWO YEARS. How i did that i have no clue, and even funnier is that itâs all mid-tempos or slow songs, which makes it even more of a mystery how this thing ever got off the ground! What are yalls favorite memories/songs?
